Magnetic hybrid motorbike unveiled in Japan

Written by admin on March 2, 2009 – 6:08 pm -

A Japanese vehicle manufacturer unveiled the prototype of a new electric motorbike carrying a hybrid magnetic motor, which can run almost noiselessly up to 180 kilometres (112 miles) on one charge. Tokyo-based Axle Corporation says that the battery of the next-generation electric vehicle motorbike can be charged at home, in the same way as a cellular phone. It takes a little over 6 hours to fully charge the battery, and the vehicle’s maximum speed is capable of reaching 150 kilometres per hour (93 miles per hour).

The company says the futuristic motorbike enjoys high energy efficiency thanks to a state-of-the-art magnetic motor which is a hybrid between a electromagnet and a permanent magnet. The new motor, called SUMO, short for “super motor,” is housed inside the bike’s rear wheel. The manufacture says the new motor is seven-times more cost efficient than gas-powered scooters.

Daisuke Ito, a professional racer who test rode the EV-X7 prototype, said it could potentially replace machines we now see in motor races. “I just feel that in the near future, we’ll be seeing these kinds of electric motorbikes running all around town. And when that happens, conventional vehicles could disappear from motor racing, too, and well be competing only in electric vehicles.”

Alternative Energy: Wave-Powered Ocean Energy Technology

Written by admin on February 14, 2009 – 6:56 pm -

The ocean is a source of two significant sustainable forms of energy: thermal energy associated with the sun’s heat absorbed by the ocean, and mechanical energy associated with the waves, currents and tides. Since the oceans cover more than 71% of the earth’s surface, these forms of energy represent the largest solar collectors and retainers of the sun’s vast energy that reach the earth’s surface. This project is being developed by Florida Atlantic University’s Center of Excellence in Ocean Energy Technology http://coet.fau.edu/

Acting In Time On Energy Policy

Written by admin on February 6, 2009 – 7:36 pm -

On September 18-19, 2008, the Belfer Center’s Energy Technology Innovation Policy (ETIP) research group convened leaders from academia, research centers, government, business, and non-governmental organizations for a major conference on U.S. energy policy, titled Acting in Time on Energy Policy. The conference was co-sponsored by the Consortium for Energy Policy Research at Harvard and the Harvard University Center for the Environment. Conference attendees discussed future energy policy directions in six main areas: global climate change, carbon capture and storage technology, oil and transportation, energy technology innovation, electricity, and leadership.

This seven-minute video captures the essence of the event and highlights recommendations given by participants during each of the six panels. A book, also titled Acting in Time on Energy Policy, edited by Kelly Sims Gallagher, Director of ETIP, and to be published by Brookings Institution Press this spring, will offer readers a comprehensive summary of the conference and versions of the presented papers. More information about the book can be found on the Brookings Institution Press website at: http://www.brookings.edu/press/Books/2009/actingintimeonenergypolicy.aspx

For more information and press inquiries, please visit the Belfer Center website: http://belfercenter.org

Technology Management Program UCSB: Energy Peak Oil

Written by admin on October 25, 2008 – 8:32 am -

Peak oil theory states that oil will have a beginning, middle, and an end of production, and at some point it will reach a level of maximum output. It is estimated that approximately half of all oil that will be recovered, has been recovered, and oil production may reach a peak in the near future, or perhaps already has. Then what?
