Tidal Energy device being developed in the UK. This video shows a tenth scale version of the device, which has been operating in Strangford Lough for the past year (June 2008 to July 2009).
The device is being designed to work in 60 meters water depth and in the fastest flow speeds, where the potential energy capture is greatest. However, as shown in this video, it is scalable to different depths and speeds.
Ocean Flow Energy Ltd were awarded a Shell Springboard Award (for the North of England and Scotland) in 2009.

project 10^100 renewable energy harnessing the power of tides and rivers

Underwater sails can capture the enormous renewable energy of flowing water. 20 or more pontoons are joined to one another via articulated links and a drive chain to form a floating loop and joints of the links form axis for rudder shafts (controlled by computer)underneath each pontoon there is a retractable sail. 8 sails at any one time are driven by the water flow and drive the pontoons and chain, the rudders are steered to follow a pre-set loop pattern thus forcing the chain to act like a PUSH CHAIN, therefore allowing the chain to drive a shore based electrical generator via a crane mounted drive shaft. The underwater sail concept can be used to capture tidal flow energy in both directions or it can be used along the length of a river.
