Securing energy supplies
On 7 November 2006 a memorandum of understanding on energy cooperation was signed between Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliev and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso. The agreement is a further indicator of the EU’s policy to diversify energy suppliers throughout the region in order to secure supply to the European market. For European consumers, the Caspian energy reserves and the pipelines that bring the oil and gas to Europe’s doorstep are increasing in importance. The EU currently imports 50% of its energy needs but that figure is set to rise to 70% by 2030.

20% renewable energy by 2020

Raising the share of renewable energy from 8.5% to 20% in the overall energy consumption is a necessary contribution to the global fight against climate change and towards better control over our energy dependence. The various uses of renewable energy are examined: electricity through wind and hydraulic energies; electricity or heat through geothermal and solar energies; electricity, heat, and biofuel coming from biomass. The EU is a world leader in the use and deployment of technologies that exploit renewable energy sources, providing over 350.000 jobs and an annual turn-over of € 30 billion.

Capturing Carbon — A new front in the fight against climate

Global warming is one of the biggest issues of our time, the European Commission says in its description of this video report.

To meet the targets set for reducing CO2 emissions, it’s widely accepted that new technology will play an important role sometimes as a “bridging technology”- while alternative sustainable energy sources are being developed.

One of the most promising technologies is Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). This a means of capturing CO2 from sources such as power plants, compressing the CO2 and storing it away safely in geological formations underground or under the seabed instead of releasing it into the atmosphere.

The video report shows: A CCS project under construction at a lignite power plant run by the energy company Vattenfall at Schwarze Pumpe, south of Berlin, An EU backed carbon storage project at Ketzin in Germany, A North Sea oil field run by the Norwegian company Statoil which was the first place in the world to begin CCS on a commercial basis, How both the EU and the US are working hard to develop the Carbon Capture and Storage technology.

Infoclip: Geothermal Energy

To illustrate the decisions on the energy package presented to the European Commission on 23/1/2008, the EC’s audiovisual service has produced an infoclip on geothermal energy. The “Sustainable Energy Europe” campaign sets out new objectives for geothermal energy production to be reached between 2005 and 2008, ie 250,000 new heat pumps, 15 new electric power plants and 10 new low energy power plants. Italy was the first country in the world to use geothermal energy, with its first generation plant installed in Larderello, Southern Tuscany in 1911. Larderello’s geothermal plants today produce 10 % of the world’s supply of geothermal energy, while powering a million Italian households. This infoclip shows the following footage filmed in Italy: -hot water springs near Larderello -small farm using geothermal energy -open vent showing the power of hot steam -geothermal plants producing electricity -greenhouse heated by geothermal energy.
